Tyler's school corporation started this really cool summer reading program that had an ending award of a new bike of your choice! They set it up to where each child, depending on their skill level, was assigned a certain number of books to read over a 2 month period. They were to go to the school at least once a week and do projects which showed they had read those books and then had book talks with volunteers to check off those books. After every 5 book talks (at least for Tyler's level) were done, they received a "stepping stone" award like a water bottle, a t-shirt, and a book, with the big prize being a voucher to Wal-mart for a free bike. If you didn't want or need a bike you could buy educational toys, crafts, books, sports equipment and accessories, school supplies, or school clothes with the voucher. It was worth $60! They even offered bus transporation home afterwards two times a week. Everyone in the community has been impressed with the program, and I believe the school corp. would like to get other school corporations involved. They had people donate the amount of money for however many bikes they wanted to sponsor, and I believe Wal-mart really stepped up and made things happen as well. I'd have to say it was one of their best ideas yet! At first Tyler wanted to buy some DS games with the vouchers, but the smart organizers of the program said the vouchers couldn't be used on toys (other than educational, like Legos) or video games. So he decided to go for the bike, since the one Kent fixed up for his birthday last year was a little too big for him still. He's been riding his new bike like crazy and it's been so nice to have him be able to go outside and be entertained without me having to be right there. He also has definitely improved his reading skills over the summer. I think they wanted to try to reach out to more than just the same students who take summer school every year, so this way they were able to give the opportunity to every child in the school. Tomorrow they are having an ending celebration where everyone is to bring their bike and they are going to have games, bike time trials, and a cookout. Tyler worked really hard, going to the school library at least twice a week for about 2 1/2-3 hours each day. We are so proud of you ,Tyler, and the huge effort and hard work you put into earning your bike! Way to go, dude!Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Wow, that is one great program! And even though Wal-Mart, in my mind, is a necessary evil, I'm impressed they helped out so much. I might have to stop hating them as much now. ;)
Way to go Tyler!
what an awesome reward! Holy cow! Good job, Tyler!
